Benefits of timeshare ownership

First off, let’s start with the basics.  You hear about them all the time, but what exactly is a timeshare?

A timeshare is a property jointly owned by people who use it at different times throughout the year. Typically, these properties are condos or resorts in high tourism locations close to the city’s attractions. The benefits of timeshare ownership continue to get better through the years.

Does owning a timeshare mean I can only stay in the same place every year based on where I purchase?

NO! That is the beauty of companies, like RCI, they offer a platform for timeshare owners to swap their weekly stays out for different locations. For example, you can list your timeshare and tell other owners that you have it up for swap for a location you want and they take your week. You can then use their timeshare instead for the week but where you want to travel to. You can do this year after year to add in some variety.

What is the difference between most hotel stays and a timeshare property?

Most hotels/ resorts have one single room that the bed is in and maybe some small appliances like a microwave on a counter. A timeshare more often than not consists of 1-3 bedrooms. They have full kitchens so you can cook including a full size fridge. Most units have two bathrooms, a full size dining, and living room for a spacious relaxing vacation space. A timeshare unit usually accommodates up to 8 travelers in comparison to a hotel that allows 4 travelers and usually charges for the 2 additional guests over 2. Amenities often include jacuzzis, multiple pools, and fireplaces depending on the location.

Can anyone buy a timeshare?

It is very much a myth that timeshare ownership is out of the hands of the average person. The average timeshare owner is 49 years old, married, and has an average income of $50,000 a year combined. One of the biggest noted benefits of timeshare ownership is that it makes it affordable for a family or couple to travel every year where they wouldn’t have been able to afford a vacation every year at normal rates.

What other benefits are offered?

Depending on the time of year, some timeshare companies also offer additional services to their owners including discounted cruises taking off from nearby ports. It is also not unheard of to hear of discounted theme park tickets and restaurant coupons to be given when you check in for your yearly stay.

Value, flexibility, and Convenience

You can lock in future vacation accommodations at today’s prices, and have the option to rent out the timeshare space or share it with family and friends. Timeshare owners have flexibility in choosing where and when to travel, the duration of their vacation, and the size of the unit. They belong to an exchange, and can swap their units to explore other destination around the world, and may be able to vacation at another time of year or group their allotted weeks together for longer vacations.

What are the most popular locations for a timeshare?

FLORIDA. With the seasons being so stable and Florida having barely any winter at all, snowbirds from all over have timeshares in Florida to escape the snow and cold every year. Check out some of the top vacation resort rentals.

I’ve been talking with my husband about looking into a timeshare. It must be fate because I was already on the site trying to figure out where we’re going for our next vacation. Maybe this is a sign!

Where can I get more information on timeshares? I’ve heard a little about them but I probably don’t know enough to really make a decision.

Hi Joseph! If you travel on one of our discounted packages, you take a presentation while checked in. They describe the benefits of a timeshare and go into details on what they’re resort in particular has to offer.

My husband and I want to invest in some property, so I wanted more info and advice on timeshares. I didn’t know there’s a platform that allows you to switch places with other timeshare owners to see new locations. I’ll have to keep that in mind and find a vacation spot that other people would enjoy coming to, thanks to this post!

It’s good that you point out that timeshares allow people to afford vacations who otherwise wouldn’t be able to. My family is on a very limited budget, but I would like to be able to take us on vacation every year. I am going to search for a timeshare to purchase in a fun location.
